When to book Christmas light installation in the GTA
Nearly every guide to this question online is American, and it will have you booking about a month too late. Here is the Canadian calendar, and the one date that actually matters.
Quick Answer
When should you book Christmas light installation in the GTA?
Book Christmas light installation in the Greater Toronto Area in September or the first half of October; by the third week of October the good November dates are usually gone. GTA installs run from the beginning of October through to mid-December, and installers work a queue in booking order — so it is the queue that fills, not the calendar. The Canadian season runs about five weeks ahead of the American one because Canadian Thanksgiving falls in mid-October rather than late November, which is why US booking guides give dates that are too late for Toronto. Booking early does not mean an early switch-on: the install date and the date you light it are chosen separately, and many GTA households wait until after Remembrance Day on 11 November.
The season
The GTA calendar, actual dates
Everything below is for the 2026 season. The dates move each year; the shape does not.
September
Booking opens
This is the only genuinely time-sensitive part. Installers work a queue in the order it was booked, and the queue is the thing that fills — not the calendar. Getting on it in September costs you nothing and does not mean your lights go up early.
From 1 October
Installs begin
GTA crews start putting displays up at the beginning of October, weather permitting. You are not obliged to switch them on. Most people who install early leave them dark until they want them.
Around Monday 12 October 2026
Canadian Thanksgiving
The first real pinch point. Almost every booking guide you will read online is American and anchors to US Thanksgiving in late November — five weeks later than ours. If you plan a GTA install to an American timeline you will be booking into a calendar that is already full.
This is the whole point of the page. Canadian Thanksgiving is Monday 12 October 2026. American Thanksgiving is in late November. Every booking guide written for a US audience is built around the later date, and following it in Toronto puts you five weeks behind.
Third week of October
The practical deadline
This is when the good November dates go. After this point you are choosing from what is left rather than picking a date, and by mid-November the established GTA installers are generally booked out entirely.
Wednesday 11 November 2026
Remembrance Day
A lot of Canadian households will not have decorations up before the 11th. That is a switch-on preference, not an install deadline — and it is the reason the install window is squeezed from both ends here. Have it installed in October, switch it on when you are ready.
January
Takedown
GTA takedowns run through January. Booking the install books the takedown at the same time, so it is one decision rather than a second phone call in the cold.
Ours specifically
How many we can actually take
Buzz Lighting is owner-operated with one small crew. That is a shorter calendar than a multi-crew franchise, and it is the honest reason to talk to us sooner rather than later.
It also means the answer you get is real. If the week you want is gone we will tell you it is gone, and if we cannot do your property properly in the time left we will say that too rather than take the deposit and rush it. A booking we cannot honour is worth less to us than a customer who comes back next year.
If you are reading this after the season has filled, the useful move is to get on the list for next year — and to look at permanent outdoor LED lighting, which is installed year-round and takes the booking scramble off your calendar for good.
When should I book Christmas light installation in the GTA?
September or the first half of October. Installers work through a booking queue in the order it was received, and the queue fills before the calendar does. Booking early secures your place, not an early switch-on date — you choose that separately.
What is the latest I can book?
Realistically, the third week of October for a November install. After that you are picking from leftover dates rather than choosing one, and by mid-November most established GTA installers are fully booked. It is worth asking anyway — cancellations happen — but do not plan around it.
Why do American booking guides give different dates?
Because they are written to US Thanksgiving, which falls in late November. Canadian Thanksgiving is in mid-October, roughly five weeks earlier, and it pulls the whole GTA season forward with it. Advice written for Dallas or Denver will have you booking about a month too late for Toronto.
Does booking early mean my lights go on early?
No. The install date and the switch-on date are separate. Plenty of people have the display installed in October and leave it dark until after Remembrance Day, or until December. The installation is the part that needs a slot; when it lights up is entirely your call.
What happens if it snows before my install date?
Snow moves individual days around — it does not move your place in the queue. Toronto normally sees its first snowfall in November, which is another reason October installs are the comfortable choice. If weather pushes your date, you keep your position rather than going to the back.
Can I still get booked in for this season?
Ask. Buzz Lighting is owner-operated with a small crew, which means a shorter calendar than a multi-crew franchise and an honest answer about what is genuinely left. If we cannot fit you in properly we will say so rather than take the booking and rush the job.
