Permanent LED lighting vs the soffit pot lights you already have

These do genuinely different jobs. One washes a wall, the other draws a roofline, and on most houses built here since the 1990s the honest answer involves both.

Quick Answer

Do permanent lights replace soffit pot lights?

No. Recessed soffit pot lights aim down and wash the wall and ground; a permanent LED channel aims outward along the roof edge and draws the shape of the house. One is illumination and the other is outline, so a permanent system will not light your front steps and pot lights cannot outline a gable or change colour. On most GTA houses the two coexist, because they want different parts of the same overhang — the channel takes the fascia or the outer band of the soffit, and the recessed lights sit back in the soffit field. Buzz Lighting installs the channel and does not remove, relocate or rewire existing pot lights: in Ontario that is a Licensed Electrical Contractor’s work. The decision actually worth making is colour temperature, so the two do not fight each other when both are on.

The whole comparison in one idea

One lights the wall. The other draws the roof.

A recessed soffit light is a downlight. It sits in the underside of the eave, set back from the edge, and throws a cone straight down. What you notice from the street is not the fixture — it is the wall it is washing and the pool of light on the driveway.

A permanent LED channel is the opposite. It is an aluminium track fixed along the fascia or the outer band of the soffit, carrying small nodes at fixed spacing, aimed outward and slightly down. What you notice is the sources themselves: a line of points following the roofline. It is not washing anything. It is drawing the house.

So they are not substitutes in either direction. A permanent system will not light your front steps, and any installer who says otherwise is selling something that does not exist. Equally, pot lights cannot follow a gable, go orange on 31 October, or be scheduled from a phone. Stand across the road at a house running both and you will see two separate things: a lit wall, and a drawn edge.

Both on one overhang

Can they share the same soffit?

On the housing stock this question comes from — aluminium soffit, recessed lights already in it — the answer is usually yes, and the reason is geometry rather than goodwill.

The channel wants the edge; the recessed lights sit back in the field of the soffit. They are not competing for the same fixing line, which is why coexistence is the normal outcome rather than a compromise.

The exceptions are real and we look for them on the measure. A narrow soffit on a garage return or a bay may not leave a clean band at the edge, and a pot light sitting unusually close to the fascia forces the run to jog — which is visible from the street for as long as the house stands. On those elevations the channel goes on the fascia instead, or the run stops short of where you pictured it.

What actually goes wrong when both are running is colour temperature. A cooler pot light sitting behind a warmer channel reads as a mistake even to people who cannot name what they are looking at, because the eye calibrates to whichever is brighter and the other one drifts yellow or blue. There are three honest fixes: set the channel white near your pot lights, treat the contrast as two deliberate layers, or run them on different nights. On a colour night, pot lights washing the same brick flatten the channel, and switching them off usually looks better.

One caution while you weigh how much light the front of the house needs. The RASC Toronto Centre notes that glare, light trespass, overlighting and sky glow can actually worsen visibility. More output is not better lighting, and this is where adding a second system can make an elevation worse.

What we will not do to your pot lights

We do not remove, relocate, rewire or reuse existing recessed soffit lights, and we do not touch the circuit they sit on. That is not caution for its own sake. Ontario’s Electrical Safety Authority states that Licensed Electrical Contractors are the only businesses legally authorised to do electrical work in your home, that they carry a seven-digit ECRA/ESA licence number you should ask to see, and that the work must be reported to ESA by filing a notification before it starts. ESA also flags a contractor asking you to file that notification in your own name as a red flag.

Buzz Lighting is a lighting installer. If a permanent system needs a supply for its transformer that the house does not already have, that part belongs to an electrician and the quote says so rather than burying it. If an outdoor receptacle is going in, ESA’s outdoor guidance is worth reading first: 120-volt 15- and 20-amp outdoor receptacles protected by a Class A GFCI, and any outlet exposed to rain or snow carrying a cover plate marked Extra Duty.

One more thing we will not answer for you. The soffit is also the intake side of your attic ventilation, and every recessed housing in it occupies part of that panel. Whether what is up there leaves adequate vent area is a roofer’s question, not a lighting company’s. We fix to the fascia or the outer band and cut no new openings in the soffit field — but if you are adding pot lights too, ask the trade that can answer it.

And we will not print lumen figures, wattages, beam angles or diode life for either product here. Those belong on a manufacturer’s specification sheet and go on your quote with the manufacturer named beside them. Performance numbers with no source attached are marketing.

Why the two quotes are not comparable

Recessed lights price per fixture, with most of the cost buried in the first one: getting a circuit to the soffit, opening what has to be opened, making good afterwards. Six more on a run that already exists is a different conversation from the first one on a soffit with nothing in it.

A permanent channel prices by the roofline: how long it is, how many separate runs it breaks into, how many peaks, dormers and returns, and how hard the high points are to reach safely. Two houses with the same floor area can sit a long way apart. The number of nodes is not what moves it; the shape of the roof is.

One asymmetry is worth knowing before you plan a budget. Pot lights phase well: front elevation now, sides later, nothing looking unfinished in between. A channel run that stops halfway across the front reads as abandoned. If money means staging the work, stage the recessed lights and complete the channel one whole elevation at a time.

Do I need permanent lights if I already have soffit pot lights?

They are not substitutes, so the question is which job you want done. Pot lights are illumination: they wash the wall and light the ground, and a permanent LED channel will not do that. The channel is outline: it draws the roofline, changes colour and runs on a schedule, and pot lights cannot do that. Plenty of GTA houses end up with both.

Can permanent lights and pot lights share the same soffit?

Usually yes, because they want different parts of it. Will permanent lights light up my walkway or driveway?

No, and any installer telling you otherwise is describing a product that does not exist. The nodes point outward off the roof edge rather than down onto the ground. If you want the front steps lit, that is a downlight, a bollard or a wall sconce, and it is a separate conversation from the roofline.

Will you remove, move or rewire my existing pot lights?

No. We do not touch the fixtures or the circuit they are on.
